Classical Wisdom Litterae - Aug 2019

When one imagines the ancient world, white elegant statues eternally frozen in marble arise in the mind. Grand architecture crowning hilltops, old men donned in togas debating endlessly, and mysterious festival processions also flit across the imagination. It was clearly another time with simple things, but grand ideas. When one mentally time travels to this epoch, one does not, however, think of Vending machines. Computers, magnetic compasses, or indeed, steam engines likewise do not fit in this conjured world. And don’t even get started on Robots.... But as you and I both know, the stereotypical ancient world was, in fact, a bit more colored, multicultural and nuanced than many like to believe. It was also a lot more technologically advanced than most give it credit for. In fact, there were so many ideas and inventions created... and then lost... before being re-invented, that it boggles the mind. And it gives one pause for thought. How many centuries were we put back with the burning of the library of Alexandria? What did one or two massive earthquakes do to wipe out so much advancement? To put it simply, how was it even possible to lose so much? And maybe, even more importantly, is it possible that this could happen again? I don’t have the answers to these essential questions; I’m happy enough to ask them. Because being aware of how much was accomplished and lost puts a lot into perspective. Plus, learning about ancient robots, vending machines and steam engines is cool, amirite? So with that in mind, please enjoy this month’s unique issue, dedicated to all the amazing ancient machines that did some wicked stuff to the enemy, heal the sick, help priests be lazy... and lay the essential foundations of engineering. (Oh yeah, that...) Enjoy! Anya Leonard Co-Founder and Project Director Classical Wisdom II
