Classical Wisdom Litterae - February 2022

T here is, of course, no possible way we could do anything approaching justice to this month’s theme. Ancient Egypt is so storied, so complex, ancient even to the ancients, a mere magazine wouldn’t even scratch the surface of this immense ancient civilization. Nonetheless, we embark in this endeavor, to carve out a small slice of understanding of a history that spans so many thousands of years. Perhaps the best way to attempt this is by sticking with our ‘beat’ here at Classical Wisdom and focusing... more or less... on the Greco-Roman period of this Nile-occupied land. Indeed, to do otherwise would require committing a lifetime (maybe several) of study and dedication. Suffice to say the tiny sliver of time of which we concern ourselves today... a mere 900 years or so... is more than enough to fill these humble pages. From education at the beginning, to the mummies at the end, we’ll try to understand the life of ancient Egyptians, some of the key people and places as well as the stunning art they left behind. We also have a special guest contribution from the famed Egyptologist, Kara Cooney: an extract from her popular book, When Women Ruled the World. Think of it as a titillating prelude to our exciting event, The War that Made the Roman Empire , taking place on March 16th at Noon EST, with Cornell Classics professor, Barry Strauss, Naval military expert WilliamM. Murray and, representing the Egyptian side of the Battle of Actium, Kara Cooney.
