Where to begin with such a cool segment of history? Perhaps at the very beginning... Indeed, the Minoans are often credited with being the first advanced civilization in Europe, leaving behind impressively large building complexes, sophisticated tools, stunning artwork, writing systems, and an extensive network of trade. But let’s put these Aegeans in historical context for one moment and journey back in time to the Bronze Age, when we first see the prevalence of the bull- fancying Minoan civilization of Crete (c.3500 BC). Some argue that the Minoans were never true Greeks, as they probably did not communicate using the Greek language. However, as their civilization paved the way (at least on Crete) for the Mycenaeans, who did speak Greek, they are impossible to remove from the equation. It is this fact that caused historian Will Durant to call the Minoans "the first link in the European chain" The Minoans have given us much, both in fascinating - and still mysterious - archeological discoveries as well as powerful mythologies that have lasted the test of time. So immerse yourself in the colorful world of the Minoans, at once recognizable and extremely exotic, and no doubt fascinating... Enjoy!
