Whatever the motivation and whatever the merits, there is often a disconnect between the study of classical civilization and biblical studies. And, though we are not pretending that this gap has never been bridged, it is worth keeping in mind that the discipline of classics and the study of the life of Jesus are rarely considered to be one and the same.

The texts deal with the events surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ, the circumstances that brought such an event about, the reason why it was so important in the first place and, in the ‘rejected gospels’ the tale of his wild and wonderful youth.
